The Perennial Plant Association has selected Andropogon gerardii ‘Blackhawks’ as the 2026 Perennial Plant of the Year, recognizing its exceptional garden performance, adaptability, and striking seasonal color.
A cultivated selection of our native big bluestem prairie grass, Blackhawks brings strong vertical structure and movement to the landscape. The foliage emerges deep green in spring, develops reddish purple tones through summer, and intensifies to a rich purplish-black by fall, making it one of the darkest ornamental grasses available. In late summer, distinctive three parted seedheads often called turkeyfoot blooms rise above the foliage, adding texture and lasting winter interest.
Reaching about five feet tall and two feet wide, Blackhawks is more compact than the straight species, making it easy to incorporate into mixed perennial borders, foundation plantings, and naturalistic designs. Plant it in full sun with well drained soil and water regularly during establishment. Once settled, it is notably drought tolerant and requires little maintenance beyond a late winter cutback. It is also very deer resistant.
Blackhawks pairs beautifully with asters, rudbeckia, echinacea, and sedum for a late season display that carries color and structure well into fall. Planted in groups, it creates dramatic sweeps of color and movement.
Beyond its ornamental appeal, this native grass supports local ecosystems by providing shelter for birds and serving as a larval host for several butterfly species. Its selection by the Perennial Plant Association highlights a growing appreciation for resilient, climate adaptable plants that deliver both beauty and ecological value.
