Japanese Cryptomeria (Cryptomeria japonica)
A graceful, stately, and handsome evergreen tree that is best used as a specimen. It lends a bit of elegant airiness to the landscape. Some consider it as a possible alternative to the Leyland Cypress. Also know as the Japanese Cedar.
Size: 30 to 40 feet high and 10 to 15 feet wide
Shape: Pyramidal-conical-irregular
Cones: Terminal cones 1/2 inch wide
Rate of Growth: Medium to Fast
Other Attributes: Takes on a bronze-green hue in winter. May be more deer-resistant than Leyland Cypress.
Growing Conditions: Plant in full sun in deep, moist, well-drained soil. Protect from high winds, especially those of winter.

'Ben Franklin' Cryptomeria (Cryptomeria japonica 'Ben Franklin') - Retains good green winter color, grows rapidly, and shares other traits and vigor with the species.
