European Hornbeam (Carpinus betulus 'Fastigiata')

European Hornbeam

A superb medium-sized oval tree of uniform proportions, the European Hornbeam functions equally well as a single specimen, in groupings, as a screen, or in the understory. Furthermore, the steel-gray, smooth, sinewy bark is a welcome addition to the winter landscape. A garden treasure.

Size: 30 to 40 feet high, 20 to 30 feet wide.

Shape: Pyramidal-oval.

Fall Color: Golden yellow.

Color: Deep green, prominently ribbed 2 to 5 1/2\" long leaves hold late in the fall.

Rate of Growth: Slow to medium.

Other Attributes: Serves as an effective screen in winter because of the dense, compact, close-knit nature of the ascending branches. Reddish-brown buds are much larger than those on American Hornbeams.

Growing Conditions: Tolerant of a wide range of soil conditions, but prefers well- drained situations. Performs best in full sun but will tolerate light to moderate shade.

Prices vary according to size, variety, and availability.
