Ornamental Grasses
Description:
Ornamental grasses have been growing in popularity in recent years. There is good reason for this, as they are durable, attractive, and easily maintained. Few pests or diseases affect them, and deer usually don’t eat them. Their graceful forms, and attractive foliage can add interest to any garden.
How to Grow:
Grasses require very little care. Although they will require regular watering when they are first planted, after they are established supplemental watering is not usually necessary. Most grasses (except as noted) require sun. They will tolerate poor soils. Cutting back the old foliage in late winter or early spring is the only maintenance needed. This practice of cutting the plants back to within 6-8" of the ground is especially desirable for large, dense plants. Removing the previous season’s growth will promote vigorous, attractive new growth. Division of established clumps can be done in early spring, while still dormant. Grasses that show uniform new growth can be left in place indefinitely. Grasses that are grown in too much shade, or in too rich soil may need staking.
Uses:
Great as specimen or accent, in perennial borders, near pools or ponds, some are useful as groundcovers, in containers, or as screening. Dried flower plumes can be used in decorative arrangements.
