Greetings from your gardening friends at Stadler Nurseries!
Garden Tips:
- Heavy snow can tear or break tree and shrub branches. As the snow begins to melt
and then refreeze, the ice layer adds additional weight. Certain plants are
particularly susceptible to damage and include Japanese maples, boxwood,
arborvitae and broadleaved evergreens. Snow can be removed by very gently
brushing it off. Never attempt to remove ice from plant branches.
- Try not to bury shrubs and perennials (especially grasses) with snow as you shovel
walks and driveways as this can cause additional damage.
- Avoid walking on frozen grass. This breaks the grass blades and mats down the
turf.
- Continue keeping the garden tidy by removing any broken or fallen branches from
the yard. If small plants have heaved out of the ground, gently press them back with
your hands; avoid compressing thawed ground with heavy boots. Retie any vines
that might have been torn from their supports.
